The problem appears to be that the directory is owned by the web server user (apache, nobody, www, www-data or suchlike) and as an FTP user you do not have enough rights to delete it, nor can you change its ownership.

The only way it can be deleted is either by your host or by a PHP script. You need to either write a one-off script to do it or maybe install MamboXplorer. Although that might create another situation that is hard to get out of.

But the real problem is that you can't properly manage a site that is in that state - if you don't have a cooperative host and you don't have a control panel, you are going to have a lot of messy issues!
